The coin protocol is much faster and much easier. This is either its major advantage or its major disadvantage, depending on your attitude toward time.
This protocol requires less than a square foot, not including area for your candles and incense. The only material you need is three of the same coins.
1. Throw the three coins.
2. Assign a two for each coin that comes up tails and a three for each coin that comes up heads. Count up the three numbers.
3. The resulting number will be a 6, 7, 8, or 9. This is the number of your bottom line.
4. Repeat this operation five more times and build up your hexagram from the bottom up.
See how much easier this is than the yarrow protocol? But somehow, it just doesn't feel right to me.
Nevertheless, this is the most widely used protocol today. In a world in which fast food restaurants are the norm, I’m not surprised.
